On January 11, we held the Fish Tank Competition kick-off at UH Hilo. Despite the inclement weather, we had a good number of participants. We had the fortune of having Pomaikai Bartolome as our emcee – she kicked off our event with a blessing and did a wonderful job moving our program along. Barett Otani from the Mayor’s office captured videos of the presentations. It was a busy and productive day – Fish Tank organizers and volunteers were on hand to keep things moving; guest speakers – Bill Kucharski and Sanne Berrig; Bruce Meyers of Okahara and Associations and Renee Ishisaka of SSFM shared the expectations of the Technical Report and engineering process; and NexTech folks Gail Takaki, Eric Hagiwara, Rebecca Choi, and Lisa Mason shared details of the student guide and other resources. Dr. Bill Bellow, a guest of one of our NexTech leads, was asked to speak to the students. He gave a brief but insightful talk. Students also got the opportunity to form their teams and to begin brainstorming their approach and potential projects.
Yes – it was a productive day!
Students who were not able to attend have the opportunity to review the materials that were shared at our FishTank Resources page. This includes videos of some of the presentations.
Here are a few images from the event.
